What Does a Postpartum Doula Do?

What Does a Postpartum Doula Do?
March 10, 2026

What does a postpartum doula do?

You’ve researched strollers, picked out a crib, and maybe even toured the hospital where you’re giving birth. But have you thought about what happens after the baby arrives? Have you thought about what happens when the adrenaline fades, and you’re home, exhausted, and figuring out a brand new normal?

That’s where a postpartum doula (cough, cough. Maybe one from Rocket City Doulas) comes in.

If this is your first time hearing about postpartum doula support, you may be wondering what does a postpartum doula do?

It’s not just about the baby.

Many people assume a postpartum doula is basically a babysitter or a newborn nurse. Someone who watches the infant while you sleep. And, sure, that’s part of it. But it’s not the whole picture.

A Rocket City postpartum and infant care doula supports your entire household during the fourth trimester. That means the baby, but it also means you. Your recovery, your confidence, your questions at 2am that you’re not sure are worth asking.

So what do they actually do?

During any given shift, your doula might help with:

  • Newborn care—feeding support, showing you how to burp or settle your baby after a tough feeding, offering simple ways to help them sleep, or making bath time less intimidating.
  • Quietly rocking and/or watching your sweet little one so you can sleep, shower, or just drink a cup of coffee while it’s hot.
  • Household help- Chopping vegetables for a nourishing soup while you catch your breath, or folding tiny onesies so the mountain of laundry feels a little more manageable (think of your everyday activities and chores that might pile up if you didn’t do them).
  • Supporting the parents- Sitting beside you in the quiet, listening to your worries at 2am during an overnight shift, or reassuring you that it’s completely normal for breastfeeding to not feel “natural” and that is absolutely fine not to have all the answers.
  • Answering questions about infant safety, feeding, and what’s normal for postpartum recovery
  • Watching for early signs of postpartum mood concerns, and knowing how to bring it up

But just as important as the tasks is the presence. A postpartum doula knows this season is a lot. They’re not there to take over or to push their parenting philosophy. Your doula is there, so you’re not doing it alone. (To make sure you feel seen and supported as a person, and not just a parent.)

You don’t have to have it all figured out.

First baby or fourth, planned birth or not, the postpartum period has a way of surprising people. (It is probably hard to imagine that they could be, but every single one of my four births and postpartum periods was wildly different!) An RCD doula meets you where you are, without judgment, and helps you find your footing as a parent.

When people ask what a postpartum doula does, that’s the honest answer. (And yes, we do all of that.)
