Rocket City Doulas: Unbiased Support
After a long, but fulfilling week at a ProDoula’s trainer’s training in 2021, I sat in the airport in Las Vegas, anxious to get home. (Did you know I used to train doulas? I miss it dearly.) I found a seat close to the window where I could sit alone. I planned to drink my coffee and charge my cell phone in silence before heading home to the chaos that is life with four busy kids and running a doula agency.
About halfway through my venti-dark roast, a lovely older woman sat one chair over from me. We started chatting about why we were in Vegas. She was there for a work conference. I proceeded to tell her why I was there. Like many of these conversations like this often go, we started talking about birth.
I continued to highlight some of our core principles at Rocket City Doulas, like unbiased support. After a while, she got tears in her eyes. She proceeded to share, “If I had had this support years ago, I might have had more children. I only have one child because my birth was so difficult.”
My new friend did not have tears in her eyes only due to the mode of her delivery, but because of how she was made to feel during her experience.
Friends, it’s hard to sell a thing that doesn’t feel tangible. Essentially, we’re selling an emotion. But, the lack of those intangible things impacted my new friend’s life for decades.
When people ask me what prompted me to become a doula, my story involves much of the same narrative. The lack of that unbiased support in my first birth was exactly why I became a doula. This is why Rocket City Doulas exists today: not to change birth outcomes, but to empower our clients with unbiased, professional, unwavering support!
