What’s the difference between a Postpartum and Infant Care Doula and a Baby Nurse?
Perhaps you’ve scrolled IG and come across ads for a baby nurse and wondered if they were the same as a postpartum and infant care doula. What’s the difference between a Postpartum and Infant Care Doula and a Baby Nurse?
It’s easy to get confused, as they are often marketed towards new parents.
So what is the difference between a postpartum and infant care doula and a baby nurse?
We can’t speak for anyone who calls themselves a baby nurse because we are a doula agency, and as such, we won’t go into much depth about their role. But, channeling our inner Chandler Bing here, what we can do is clarify what our Rocket City Doulas postpartum and infant care doulas DO, DO.
Our credentials– our postpartum and infant care doulas are trained, practiced, and certified before receiving their credentials. They are overseen by a governing certifying organization with a client grievance policy and a clear scope of practice outside of the Rocket City Doula agency. All of our doulas also must have clear background checks and must hold current CPR certifications. You can rest assured that your doula is professional and held to the high standards of Rocket City Doulas and their certifying organizations.
Parenting Philosophies– Our Rocket City Doula postpartum and infant care doulas are trained and equipped with the knowledge, tools, and experience to guide and educate parents on various styles of parenting, including scheduled parenting, attachment parenting, and a combination of both, in a judgment-free place of compassion and empathy.
Our doulas do not enter your home with an “ideal” parenting philosophy in mind but rather help you find yours and support your family’s unique needs and goals.
Household Chores, Meals, Sibling Care, Errands– Our Rocket City Doulas take care of the entire family unit- not just the new baby. It is well within the scope of the doula to handle daily tasks, errands, light cleaning, sibling care, etc. Our clients can count on the doula to make sure they stay nourished and hydrated. They will entertain the toddler while the client is sleeping with the infant, or take care of the infant while the client spends time with the toddler. Our RCD doulas recognize that the entire family is transitioning as a new family member is added.
Postpartum Recovery and Emotional Well-Being– Our Rocket City Doulas postpartum and infant care doulas are trained to recognize normal signs of postpartum recovery. The doula is knowledgeable in the emotional needs of a new parent. Our clients can count on the RCD doula to take care of their physical and emotional needs as they are recovering from both after birth in addition to the needs of the new baby.
