If you follow up on social media, you may have seen our recent posts introducing our doula team. We’re also beginning a short series on introducing our Rocket City Doulas doulas in blog format! Today, we hear from Sarah! One of our labor AND postpartum and infant care doulas.
What are your certifications and training?
Labor Doula and Postpartum and Infant Care Doula trained and certified through ProDoula.
Why did you become a doula?
I have always loved helping others in one way or another and having grown up in a missionary family, I learned from an early age the value of community. After the birth of my first child and having complications leading to a six day NICU stay, I really struggled to find that community that I so desperately needed. There was one friend that came to visit us during the first month we were home and I remember so vividly how different of a visit it was compared to others. Instead of the focus being solely on my daughter, she mothered me. It was such a simple question but she asked, “When was the last time you changed your sheets?” and then proceeded to change my bed sheets! It was such a simple gesture, but it meant so much to me. Ever since then, I wanted to make it a mission of mine to be that kind of friend to others. That is when the journey into the field of birth work began.
Why did you want to join Rocket City Doulas?
I actually heard Tracy on a podcast back in 2020 (Winning at the Mom Life with Dana Stone) and thought how cool it would be to join Rocket City Doulas someday! Finding a community of doulas with the agency really called to me.
What’s your favorite thing about working with RCD?
I really look forward to our monthly meetings and the ongoing education that comes with RCD.
What is your favorite thing about being a doula?
Having the opportunity to uplift and support another family is my favorite. To see them relax because you are there.
Without revealing client information, what was your most memorable event/conversation/situation where you thought “This is what makes it all worth it?”
I met a client’s family member and when I told them I was one of their doulas, they said “Ah, the lifesavers!” That filled my heart with so much joy.
What’s the hardest thing about being a doula?
Being on call can be tricky, but having a partner to share the on call schedule with makes it not that bad!
What’s your favorite random doula fact?
There is research showing that cursing can help with coping in labor!
When you’re not with clients, what are you doing?
I’m either parenting or at a coffee shop studying birth stuff!
What are your favorite things to do for fun, and why?
I love living room dance parties with my kids. I also love hiking. The woods is where I go to reflect and ground myself.
What’s your favorite dad joke?
What did the earthquake say when it was done? Sorry, my fault!
What else should we know about you?
I am passionate about postpartum nutrition and love to share recipes for the postpartum period!
