Many times clients may have a fear that once they chose an epidural it means they will have to be limited to laboring on their backs.
Usually we can help clients with an epidural get into a variety of positions using the tools available for use at the hospital!
We’ve created this post to show you just a few of those position options! The sky is your limit (or maybe, the bed is your limit? But, with endless possibilities of positions!)
Here are just a few positions you can utilize with an epidural (in order of images):
Squat mimic- ok, so maybe that isn’t an official name, but it’s what I personally call this position. Lift the head of the bed semi-reclined to upright, throw the cub stool and pillows behind you, drop the foot of the bed down and scooch your booty to the edge (with help!) so you’re almost in a squat position (or exaggerated upright position). You can use the squat bar for extra support!
Squat resting- The same position as above, except you can lean over the squat bar to rest (or use a pillow on the squat bar to rest).
Hands and knees with the Cub stool- We’ve also gotten clients comfortable in hands and knees using pillows, but if a cub stool is available, it makes resting in this position even more comfortable. Lower the foot of the bed to drop the knees, and scooch yourself into the “U” portion of the Cub so your belly rests in that scoop and take a quick nap!
Semi-reclined- a great resting position, you can also use the peanut ball under one thigh to open your pelvis and create ambulation.
