Strategies for Coping Without Medication During Labor

For those planning an unmedicated birth, preparation is key. While labor can be intense, having the right mindset, support system, and coping strategies can make a significant difference. At Rocket City Doulas, we support all birth choices, whether you plan to labor without medication or keep your options open. If your goal is an unmedicated birth, here are some essential strategies for coping without medication during labor
1. Believe you can do it, because you can!
Your mindset is powerful. If can only do one thing to prepare yourself for an unmedicated labor, getting your mind right is the place to start! Confidence in your ability to give birth without medication can help you push through challenging moments. Surround yourself with positive birth stories, affirmations, and reminders of your strength. Create a “bubble of peace” to shut out advice or stories that may bring you stress and worry.
2. Hire a RCD doula
Continuous support during labor has been shown to reduce the likelihood of interventions. A RCD doula provides emotional reassurance, physical comfort, and advocacy, helping you stay focused on your birth plan. (Plus, your RCD doula supports your entire family unit, helping your partner in a way that makes sense for your family.)
3. Have a written birth plan
Yes, I know. This is controversial. Everyone has a plan for birth, though, even if it is simply “get this baby out of me.” Your plan doesn’t have to be rigid. Consider it less of a “things have to go exactly this way” document and more of a “yes and no” wish list for your hospital staff. Communicate your wishes clearly to your birth team.

4. Stay active and change positions
Movement can help labor progress and make contractions more manageable. Walking, swaying, lunging, and using a birth ball can ease discomfort and encourage your baby to descend. (Insider hint- don’t exhaust yourself with tons of movement in early labor! Think “active for active labor”. Early labor is for rest/sleep.) Your doula can help you find different positions that bring you comfort and encourage labor progression.
5. Labor at home (if you feel comfortable)
Many people find that staying home in early labor helps them cope better. Familiar surroundings, access to a warm shower or bath, and fewer people allow your body to labor in a relaxed state. Your doula or partner can help support you at home before heading to your birth location.
6. If you choose medication, ask for an exam first
If you reach a point where you are contemplating more pain relief options, ask for a vaginal exam before receiving medication. Sometimes, you may be further along than you think, and knowing how close you are can give you the motivation to continue without intervention.
7. Delay the decision to get medication
When you feel like you need medication, set small time goals before making a final decision. For example, try saying, “Let’s wait two more contractions” or “Let’s see how I feel in five more minutes.” Breaking labor into smaller moments can make it more manageable.

8. Explore multiple pain relief techniques
Different coping techniques work for different people. Hydrotherapy (warm showers or baths), counter pressure, massage, breathing techniques, vocalization for support can all provide comfort during labor. You can find one you love and use that your entire labor, or even combine a few (counter pressure in the shower?? Yes, pease!) Try a few out to see what works best for YOU.
Labor is Powerful. So Are You!
Labor is an intense and transformative experience, and every contraction brings you closer to meeting your baby. Whether you choose to labor without medication, plan for pain relief using an epidural, or adjust your plan along the way, remember that your experience is valid. Take each moment as it comes, rest when you can, and trust in the support around you.
