There are several different bathing techniques. Every family will find their favorite style of bathing their baby, and you’ll learn what works best for yours.
The main three are:
- Sponge Bathing- typically used in the early days/week
- Submersion Bathing
- Co-bathing
Today we’re covering Co-bathing!
While all methods of cleaning your baby can be a bonding experience, co-bathing is especially so.
As with the other 2 types of infant bathing, before co-bathing, be sure to gather all of your supplies before you begin.
You’ll need:
- cotton balls
- washcloths
- baby soap/shampoo
- towel
Co-bathing can occur in the bath or the shower, whatever your preference. (It’s important to note that wet babies are slippery, so use caution!). It can be helpful for the person bathing with your baby to get into the tub or shower first, and then be handed the baby to start the bathing process.
Once the baby is clean, the co-bathing parent can hand the baby back to the person outside of the bath/shower for them to dry with a towel.
*helpful hint: If co-bathing in the tub, some parents prefer to support their baby against their bent knees, and some prefer to support their baby with their arms and hands.
The actual process of cleansing your baby will be the same as with submersion bathing.
- Start cleansing the eyes with a wet cotton ball (no soap) starting in the corner of the eye and gently wiping towards the outside of the eye.
- With a clean washcloth, wash the head/scalp
- Clean the extremities
- Clean the back and bottom
- Then clean the genitals. (Again, think cleanest to dirtiest.)
Co-bathing was my (Tracy) personal favorite as a parent. It ensured that I was able to take a shower myself, while also bathing our babies.
